Furniture business startups almost double in January


January saw a successive month-on-month double-digit growth of UK furniture retail and manufacturing companies registered.

According to Government data compiled by Cabinet Maker, 226 new companies were incorporated between 1st and 31st January 2017, with the manufacturing sector registering over 100.

January’s overall figure represents an increase of 60.2% on last December’s 141 new startups, with retail, manufacture and wholesaler sectors all reporting growth from a variety of product categories including beds, upholstery, carpets and outdoor furniture.

Within the furniture manufacturing sector, 115 new companies were filed at Companies House, 85.4% up from 62 registered in December. Retail companies grew by 56.3% to 86 incorporations from 55 the previous month, whilst wholesale businesses saw an increase of 56.2% to 25 from 16 in December.

Across the UK, England registered 207 new companies, representing the vast majority of incorporations. Scotland filed eight, Northern Ireland saw six and Wales reported five new startups, whilst the busiest period was towards the end of the month with 129 filed post 16 January.

On an annual basis, 1,305 furniture related businesses were registered during 2016, with 671 representing manufacturers – 25 of which were mattresses, 494 in the retail sector and 140 within wholesale.
